Year 7 Maths and Science Groups – Letter to Parents/Carers

Year 7 – Maths and Science Groups
Due to the ongoing pandemic both the Maths and Science Departments at Hanham Woods Academy have decided to conduct a short assessment with all of Year 7 to ensure students are grouped appropriately. This was completed in Maths lessons and staff are currently organising groups based upon these results as well as their work in class to date. Typically, this would be done using the data from Primary SATS Papers but unfortunately due to the pandemic this was never possible as all examinations were cancelled.
There will be a fast track set in both the x and y side of the Year Group, with the other 2 groups in each side of the Year being mixed ability. Please be aware, therefore, that there is no distinction between group 2 and 3 in each side of the Year as we are keen to avoid any stigma associated with ‘bottom sets’.
Where possible, we will ensure students remain in their current sets to minimise any disruption. Student numbers in group 2 and 3 will be lower to ensure we offer the best support for all of our students every day. It is important to stress that these groups remain fluid throughout the year; with students frequently having opportunities to change their set based upon tests, classwork and the quality of their homework.
These changes will be made week commencing Monday 21st September 2020.
