Remembrance Day – 11th November 2022

Dear Parents/Carers

Friday 11th November 2022 marks Remembrance Day: a time to commemorate victims of war past and present, and to remember people significant to us who are no longer here.

In the UK, Remembrance Day is traditionally marked by acts of remembrance, including a two-minute silence at 11am.

At Hanham Woods Academy, we will be marking the day in a number of ways to reflect upon the past but also honour those worldwide who are experiencing loss due to conflict.

In the Academy…

  • Mr Singleton, Head of Humanities will be delivering an informative and thought provoking-assembly to students during tutor time to develop students’ understanding of Remembrance Day.
  • Student Leaders have been selling Poppies to raise money for the British Legion at break and lunch times.   The Royal British Legion runs the Poppy Appeal to raise money to provide support for serving or former members of the British Armed Forces.
  • Mrs Hurrell, Associate Assistant Principal, has arranged for all students to take part in a shared Act of Remembrance on Friday 11th November where we will be coming together as an Academy community to pause and remember.   Students will join an online TEAMS event in classrooms where staff and students will be sharing poetry, a speech and also a special performance of The Last Post by Mr Jon Hall, Assistant Director of Music at Millfield School.

We hope that this event will enable students have a deeper understanding of British Values and the significance of Remembrance Day.

Dream BIG // Work Hard // Be Kind
