Remembrance Day – Monday 11th November 2024
Dear Parents / Carers
Monday 11th November 2024 marks Remembrance Day: a time to commemorate victims of war past and present, and to remember people significant to us who are no longer here.
In the UK, Remembrance Day is traditionally marked by acts of remembrance, including a two-minute silence at 11am.
At Hanham Woods Academy, we will be marking the day in a number of ways to reflect upon the past but also honour those worldwide who are experiencing loss due to conflict.
In the Academy…
- Miss Dora, Head of History will be delivering an informative and thought provoking-assembly to students during tutor time to develop students understanding of Remembrance Day.
- Student Leaders have been selling Poppies to raise money for the British Legion at Tutor Time.
- Mrs Hurrell, Associate Assistant Principal, has arranged for all students to take part in a shared Act of Remembrance on Monday 11th November where we will be coming together as a school community to commemorate this event. Staff and students will be sharing readings, watching /partaking in a Parade and observing a two-minute silence.
Our Parade will consist of students who belong to Scouts/Guides/St. John’s Ambulance/Air Cadets etc. Students who have expressed an interest in joining this parade, will need to attend the Academy in their specific uniform and will rehearse in advance of the ceremony. If your child has not notified Mrs Hurrell, please email to advise us that they wish to be a pivotal part of this event.
We hope that this event will enable students have a deeper understanding of British Values and the significance of Remembrance Day.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please email Mrs Hurrell,
Best Wishes,
Mrs Hurrell | Associate Assistant Principal
