SCUDO Research Project – Parent/Carer Notification -Years 7 & 8

Dear Parent/Carer,

Cabot Learning Federation has volunteered to take part in the ‘SCUDO’ research project. The SCUDO research project is being jointly run by University College London (UCL), Cabot Learning Federation (CLF), Dixons Academies Trust, and ONVU Limited. This research aims to improve the way we train new teachers. Findings from the research will benefit teachers and pupils.

This letter informs you of our plan to process personal data and your rights regarding that data processing.

What will the SCUDO research project look like?

The SCUDO research project will work with around 35 trainee teachers from CLF and the people training them. The project will investigate whether the amount and nature of the training received by new teachers improves their ability to manage behaviour in their classrooms. The focus of the research is the trainee teachers, not pupils at CLF schools.

What does this mean for my child and Me?

  1. A camera and microphone will be installed in classrooms which are being used by the trainee teachers taking part in the research.
  2. The camera and microphone will record what happens in the classroom used by the trainee teachers taking part in the research. One lesson per week will be chosen by the researchers and downloaded for use in research. The only people that will ever view these videos are CLF employees and the research team.
  3. All recordings captured during the project will be encrypted and stored securely.
  4. All recordings stored on the cameras will be automatically deleted after one month.
  5. Data collection will begin in September 2022 and end in December 2022.
  6. The research project will end in summer 2025 and all recordings which have been downloaded for further analysis will be securely destroyed at this point.

On what legal basis will the research team process this data?

UCL will process the data under the ‘public task’ lawful basis, on the grounds that this research project should benefit society by providing new evidence on improving the training of new teachers. UCL will be joint controllers of the data along with CLF.

What are your rights?

The General Data Protection Regulation grants people certain rights with respect to their personal data.
