Y11 Post 16 – Update

Dear Parents/Carers,

Year 11 Post 16 Update

As we approach Christmas, it’s traditionally a time of year when Year 11 students are considering their Post 16 pathway.

A range of pathways are open to students, from vocational qualifications to A Levels and Apprenticeships. It’s an exciting time for them, full of new possibilities and ventures.

The next couple of months will flyby, students should start thinking about their Post 16 decisions now and make the relevant application(s). To make this process easier, and importantly informed – we have had several providers and guest speakers in at the Academy in Terms 1 and 2.

Post 16 Providers from Terms 1 and 2

Two careers’ fairs each featuring 8-10 local providers

Visiting speakers:

  • St Brendan’s College
  • CLF Post 16
  • Boomsatsuma
  • Bath College
  • Greenlight Training
  • Western Apprenticeships
  • UWE

In addition to Post 16 providers coming in to educate students on the range of pathways available and providing guidance as to how make next step decision(s), one to one careers guidance interviews are taking place for all students; to support students through the process of deciding what direction they would like to take when they leave the Academy. Popular choices for students currently, are applying to study A Levels at St Brendans College and applying for an Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships

Students looking to go into a vocational trade such as plumbing, electrics or carpentry have been supported with an additional applications workshop and enhanced careers one:one support where required.

To find an apprenticeship we would recommend using the ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ website: https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

On occasions (depending on the subject area/role desired) students have found when searching for apprenticeships that no results have been retrieved or that the openings are not relevant to the student at this moment in time.

Our advice is that all students need to apply for college course(s) as a back-up whilst continuing to look for apprenticeships. For example, a good back-up choice for a student interested in becoming an electrician would be the Electrical Installation Level 2 course at the City of Bristol College: https://www.cityofbristol.ac.uk/courses/electrical-installation-level-2/
