Year 8 Mixed Class Changes

09 November 2023

Dear Parent/Carer

Year 8 Mixed Class Changes

As we move into the third week of Term 2, I wanted to provide you with some key information regarding Year 8 classes.

As you are aware, after much careful and consideration and consultation with our Subject Curriculum Leaders, we took the decision to move to mixed ability groupings (except in Maths which due to the linear nature of the subject, has and will continue in ability groupings). Our decision was based on research from the Education Endowment Foundation’s research into the impact of streaming/setting as well as our positive outcomes of mixed ability groupings as seen at KS4.

After a period of settling into the new academic year, we have taken time to review our class dynamics and will be making a few changes across the year group to ensure that we continue with our mission of giving all students the best chance of success.

We have decided to make these changes to ensure that we are providing students with a purposeful balance of a positive culture and an engaging curriculum ahead of the KS3 Assessments which will take place at the end of term 2 and the start of term 3. Additionally, we will review Maths classes following assessments to make sure that the class reflects students’ abilities.

Year 8 students will receive a new timetable on their return to the Academy on Monday 13th November followed by a Re-Orientation to remind students of the Academy expectations.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at [email protected]

Yours Sincerely,

Nicola Hurrell
