Citizens UK – Event – Monday 29th April – 5pm – 7pm

This year we are working with Citizens UK to conduct community listening campaigns so that we can empower members of our schools community to enact changes in their local areas. As part of this work, Citizens UK have listened to student views on what they would like to change in their local area and this information is going to be shared in a special event attended by local leaders who have the power to make these changes.

We have been asked to encourage as many of you to attend this important event by Citizens UK. It takes place on Monday 29th April 2024, and we would like to invite students with their parents and carers to attend an Accountability Assembly at City Academy. This event will take place from 5pm to 7pm. Food is available at 5pm and the assembly will start at 5:30pm. It is free to attend (including the meal) but you must sign up to attend. Those attending without signing up will not be admitted. This event is a fantastic chance to listen to the views of young people and parents across Bristol speaking up for change.

As this is a community event, students who wish to attend will need to be chaperoned by parents/carers. They will also need to make their own travel arrangements there and after the event. Please note this is not a school trip so parents/carers will be responsible for chaperoning the students attending for the duration of the event.

If you would like to attend, please register all people attending using the link below:

We are also looking for some student volunteers to:

-read out the roll call for Hanham Woods Academy about the number of people linked to our school attending

-help the running of the event such as signing in guests and helping them find their seats

-possibly opportunities to share a story about change they want in the local community

If you would like your student to have an additional role then please email [email protected]. You will need to commit to ensuring you can attend this event with your young person. There are limited number of roles and they will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. It would be a fantastic opportunity for young people to play an active role but if they would like to come along and attend without a role that would be brilliant too.

We need your help and your voice:

As a parent, if there is a topic you feel strongly about the challenges facing young people in the community for example knife crime, safety, community resources and if you want your story heard please email Sandra Lawson, who is our community organiser [email protected] .  She will be in contact with you to hear your story. When you email please let her know you are contacting her as a parent from Hanham Woods Academy.

There will be staff attending the event in support of it too and I will be co-chairing the event so we hope to see you there. If you have any questions or queries please email [email protected]  .

About Citizens UK and Accountability Assemblies:

Accountability assemblies provide a platform that enables communities to develop their voices and come together with the power and strategy needed to make real change.

Do Citizens UK endorse political candidates?

No. Citizens UK is a non-partisan charity therefore we don’t endorse any political party. We have a vision of an organised, healthy civil society holding the state and the market to account. We take our non-partisan role in British democracy seriously. To endorse any political candidates would damage our ability to hold politicians to account as a non-partisan organisation.
